The Municipality of Larissa participates in a new European program on strengthening the implementation of national climate change adaptation policy. The project "LIFE-IP AdaptInGR - Boosting the implementation of adaptation policy across Greece" aspires to strengthen the implementation of the National Strategy and Regional Plans for Adaptation to Climate Change during the current 1st Cycle of Adaptation to Climate Change (2016-2025), but also to prepare for the transition to the 2nd Adaptation Policy Round (2026+). The kick-off meeting took place in Athens on April 2-3, 2019, and was preceded by a formal presentation at a press conference by the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Socrates Famellos.
The LIFE-IP AdaptInGR project is running for 8 years (2019-2026) and has a total budget of € 14.2m, with actions at national level, including the creation of a platform that will deliver climate model results and climate risk integration guides to projects and functions of our society, elaboration of indicators to quantify phenomena, as well as extensive information, awareness raising and capacity building activities. In addition, an important element of the project is the implementation of pilot actions in the 3 Regions and 5 Municipalities involved in the design of flood infrastructure, early warning systems for flood hazards, coastal zone protection projects and coastal erosion monitoring, forest prevention fires, water resources management in areas with deficit water balance and urban regeneration planning.
The pilot action of the Municipality of Larissa will be implemented in the the 4th Gymnasium - 4th High School - 2nd Elementary School educational complex, with the environmental redevelopment of the school yards, in accordance with the principles of climate change adaptation, so as to be a tool for raising awareness of local communities and of transferring paradigms, both in Larissa and nationally.
